What type of renewable energy system(s) do you use?: photovoltaics (PV), wood/biomass heating

Describe your system(s): 4 old Kyocera panels, 6 cylindrical retired 2V phone-system batteries (2000AH total), the usual aging components, back-up diesel generator for winter use. The photovoltaics supply 100% of electricity for house & woodshop (!) from April to October, but are not adequate for winter. We run the generator every few days in winter to charge up the batteries.

Why do you use renewable energy systems?: remote location - no grid power available, off-grid by choice, secure energy supply (backup power), to reduce my carbon footprint, financial benefits
